Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal part of human existence. It’s part of your natural fight-or-flight response to perceived threats. However, if you live with constant anxiety or fears that are interfering with your ability to function and interact with colleagues, friends, or family, you may have an anxiety disorder.

There are several types of anxiety disorders that cause a cycle of negative feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common of these disorders. You may have intense and intrusive negative fears about everyday situations that aren’t usually dangerous.

For example, you may harbor unreasonable concerns about the health and safety of you or your family, or even about appointments or chores.

Other common types of anxiety include:

  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Specific phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Separation anxiety

While panic disorder causes panic attacks, the other types of anxiety manifest in specific fears or situations that trigger anxiety.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

In addition to living with frequent or constant worries or fears or an impending sense of doom, anxiety can cause a variety of disruptive symptoms, including:

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Disrupted sleep or insomnia
  • Feeling weak or fatigued
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Avoidance behaviors

If you’re living with disproportionate fears and anxiety symptoms that are disrupting your life, make an appointment at Mountain View Psychiatry and TMS for compassionate assessment and care.

How is anxiety treated?

At Mountain View Psychiatry and TMS, Dr. Tayyib and her team begin treatment with a comprehensive assessment. They ask questions about your symptoms, overall health, and lifestyle. Dr. Tayyib may also provide a physical exam and testing for other health conditions that could contribute to your symptoms, such as a thyroid disorder.

Once Dr. Tayyib understands your condition and needs, she works with you to implement a customized, multidisciplinary treatment plan, which may include medication, therapy, meditation, dietary adjustments, or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy.

For example, you may find that medication alleviates your symptoms and clears your mind, allowing you to explore the underlying issues that contribute to your anxiety. Also, during therapy, you learn and practice different strategies for identifying your anxious thoughts and adapting your behavioral response.

If anxiety is interfering with your life, call Mountain View Psychiatry and TMS or schedule a consultation online today.
